Privacy Policy

Rays Atlas is a free, ad-supported site. This page lists what runs in your browser when you load a page here, what gets collected, and how to opt out.

What we collect directly

We don't run accounts and we don't ask for personal information. We don't sell data. The site itself stores no server-side profiles of individual visitors. The only data we keep ourselves is email correspondence, retained for as long as the conversation is open.

Everything else is collected by the third-party services described below, which run in your browser when a page loads.

Third parties that load on every page

Google Analytics 4

We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and understand which pages people use. It sets first-party cookies on your browser — primarily _ga and _ga_<container> — to attribute repeat visits and sessions, and it sends events to Google including the page URL, referrer, and approximate location derived from your IP. The Analytics script is loaded in a web worker via Partytown so that it doesn't block the main thread, but the cookies and network requests still occur. Google's data practices for sites that use Analytics: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Google AdSense

We display advertising through Google AdSense. AdSense and its advertising partners may set cookies including __gads, __gpi, IDE, and NID to measure ad delivery and, where permitted, to personalise the ads you see. Google's full advertising-practices documentation and per-product cookie list is at policies.google.com/technologies/ads. You can disable personalised advertising on Google-served ads at adssettings.google.com; you can also opt out of third-party vendor cookies at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.

Cloudflare

The site, the per-ZIP page router, and the tile CDN at cdn.raysatlas.com all run on Cloudflare. Cloudflare sees every request and uses it for caching, performance, and bot mitigation. Cloudflare's policy: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Map tiles and webfonts

The interactive map loads base tiles from basemaps.cartocdn.com (CARTO) and the page loads webfonts from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com (Google Fonts). Both providers receive your IP address as part of a normal HTTP request when those assets load. Their policies: CARTO, Google.

EEA, UK, and Switzerland

If you visit from a region covered by the GDPR or UK GDPR, Google's consent management for publishers will, where applicable, prompt you to choose between personalised and non-personalised ads before AdSense serves a personalised ad request. If you decline, ads will still be shown but they will be contextual rather than targeted to you specifically.

California (CCPA / CPRA)

We do not sell personal information for money. Certain ad-related cookies set by Google may, however, be classified as a "sale" or "share" under California law. To opt out of personalised advertising served on this site:

What we don't do

  • No accounts, passwords, or per-user profiles.
  • No newsletter, email list, or retargeting pixels beyond what AdSense itself sets.
  • No data sales to data brokers.
  • No cross-site tracking by Rays Atlas. The third parties listed above behave according to their own policies.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us correspondence, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

Material changes are reflected here with an updated last updated date at the top of this page. Prior versions remain in the public commit history of the site.
